Driving your own car down the road with no particular destination is such an exciting way to travel. If you are setting out and seeing where the road takes you, enjoy these quotes!
I want to start out with a heavy hitter.
Always the journey, never the destination. – Simon Rattle
This is a great quote to guide your trip, embrace the journey! It is all about the journey!
Rattle is a British conductor who looks like he is having a great time on his journey. I have so much respect for artists and musicians and Rattle is ranked as the world’s second best living conductor!
Make your road trip playlist and think of Simon Rattle.
Sometimes it is the journey that teaches you a lot about the destination – Drake
If you are hesitant to embrace the journey, consider these wise words by Drake:
I thought I would kick it off with some wise words from Drake. The Canadian rapper and actor of DeGrassi fame has something to say.
I agree that the journey is so valuable!
You can see how I use Google Maps to find things on the fly and live like a local on the road in the linked post.
Focus on the journey, not the destination. Joy is found not in finishing an activity but in doing it. – Greg Anderson
If you are used to traveling in order to get somewhere, you may have to practice finding joy in the doing, not just the accomplishing.
This quote is even more powerful when you learn that Greg is a race car driver! He knows a thing or two about a finish line and a journey!
It is important to remember to slow down and find joy in the journey instead of waiting to hit a goal to celebrate.
Life is short and we have never too much time for gladdening the hearts of those who are travelling the dark journey with us. Oh be swift to love, make haste to be kind. – Henri Frederic Amiel
After learning more about Amiel, this may be my favorite quote on the list.
The wise words from the Swiss philosopher Amiel is known for his incredible journal that he kept. Amiel had a very successful life but he felt like a failure. Spreading kindness is so important because no matter how successful someone may be, you don’t know what they are really going through.
Be kind.
The journey matters as much as the goal. – Kalpana Chawla
Another reminder to not wait till you get where you are going before you look around and find happiness.
Chawla is an American astronaut born in India. She is an incredible woman who has achieved so much in her life! She was the first Indian woman to go to space.
She has accomplished some big goals, but she knows the journey is more important than the goal, even if the goal is world changing.
I think it’s my adventure, my trip, my journey, and I guess my attitude is, let the chips fall where they may. – Leonard Nimoy
Nimoy had quite the journey before landing his most well known role as Spock on Star Trek.
Spock knows about seeing where life leads you. Nimoy’s parents were Jewish Ukrainian immigrants overcoming incredible challenges before coming to America. Nimoy acted from the age of 8 but did not land the role that brought him universal recognition until he was 35!
This role would eventually earn him 3 Emmy awards!
The feeling remains that God is on the journey, too. – Saint Teresa of Avila
Sometimes a trip is not a vacation, it is a journey, maybe even a spiritual journey. St. Teresa of Avila is a very interesting spiritual author and her books are still widely read.
Saint Teresa of Avila is the author of The Interior Castle, a prominent Spanish theologian and leader in the catholic faith in the 1500s.
She traveled extensively, very notable for the time in which she lived. I think we can trust her with travel advice.
This is a great reminder on difficult or healing trips or when something goes wrong on your trip. What a joy to know that God remains with you on the journey.
Thank you, hard taco shells, for surviving the long journey from factory, to supermarket, to my plate and then breaking the moment I put something inside you. Thank you. – Jimmy Fallon
Who doesn’t like tacos? At the same time, who can relate to this quote by Mr. Fallon. That is why we stick to nachos.
The late night talk show host has a different take on the journey. This is a great quote for a letter board or a great slogan for your fun adventure.
Yea, maybe don’t try to pack hard taco shells if you are on a road trip…I think you will find that they don’t make the trip well.
There’s no destination. The journey is all that there is, and it can be very, very joyful. – Srikumar Rao
This takes it a step further, there is no destination! What a tough shift!
Rao is the author of Happiness at Work. He is a TED Talk speaker who coaches people to be ready to succeed.
I know I am a very driven person and my mom often has to remind me to be in the present. I think it is important to celebrate where we are with no joy lost waiting to hit that next milestone.
